OUR GHEE

We, at Ahara Rasa, make more than just "clarified butter". According to Ayurvedic text and principles, to be true GHEE, it must be cultured to get the health benefits of improved digestion and increased mental wellness, among others.

Our founders were trained Ayurvedic Practitioners, with certifications from the California College of Ayurveda, and Post-Graduate studies with beloved Ayurvedic Doctors from all over the world, including: Dr. Sarita Shrestha and her Student, Ysha Oakes, as well as Dr. Claudia Welch DOM/ Ayurvedic Physician.

We bow to the superior knowledge of our teachers globally, who have selflessly and carefully imparted their traditions, from their medicines and from their own kitchens to us and entrusted us with their creation. We give our deepest thanks to the sages who brought Ayurveda to the world and to the teachers who brought it to us.

We carefully source our butter from farms with the highest animal welfare status and are the only cultured ghee company to be Animal Welfare Certified® and Truly Grassfed®.  We ONLY use cultured butter.  Nearly all clarified butter, being sold as "ghee" in grocery stores, including Indian grocery stores, is NOT made from cultured butter, and therefore, may lack the benefits of true ghee.

"Ahara Rasa" (Ah-hah-rah  Ruh-Sah) means, in short, "the essence of food" in Sanskrit. It is the end product of good digestion and the subtle energy derived from your food, rather than the mass itself.

Ahara Ghee is committed to the traditional process of ghee outlined in the Charak Samhita ( one of the main ancient texts of Ayurvedic Medicine, used for thousands of years and still relevant today!). This process specifies that ghee should be made from Makhan (cultured butter) where the cream is first turned to yogurt before being churned into butter. ARG also makes the ghee in small batches, over open flame rather than in large steam kettles like much of the other ghee on the market.  While we get absolutely as close as we can to the very traditional process, there are some things we cannot do in the US, and for those of you who wish to be treated to the extremely traditional process, with handmilked cows, you should try the MahaGhee® from the Green Ashram in Gujarat.

We are confident that these fastidious and specific rules by which we create our ghee make for a better tasting, healthier and more medicinally viable ghee that you will feel in every cell and be proud to feed your family. Thank you for supporting artisanal food!
